Second Commandment: Worship

Understanding the Second Commandment and what is forbids

Can an image represent God?

Scripture

Can an image represent God?

The golden calf shows us the danger of trying to reduce the living God to something made by human hands.

Israel claimed the image represented the God who brought them out of Egypt — yet Scripture still calls what they did sin.

“You had made for yourselves a molten calf… You had turned aside quickly from the way that the LORD had commanded you.” (Deut. 9:16))

God is not to be reshaped according to our imagination. He reveals himself through his word, and he alone determines how he is to be worshipped. ✝️

Why did God forbid idolatry?

Scripture

Why did God forbid idolatry?

Because no created image can truly represent the living God.

Throughout Exodus, God revealed himself through his mighty acts — the burning bush, the plagues, the pillar of cloud, and the crossing of the Red Sea. Yet Israel was still warned not to replace him with something made by human hands.

Idolatry reduces the creator to something created.

God alone is worthy of worship. ✝️

Why did early Christians worship on Sunday

Scripture

Why did early Christians worship on Sunday?

For the early church, Sunday carried special meaning because it was the day of Christ’s resurrection.

Justin Martyr, writing in the second century, explained that Christians gathered on Sunday because it was the first day of creation and the day Jesus rose from the dead.

The resurrection changed everything. Sunday became a day for believers to gather, remember Christ, worship together, and celebrate the hope of the risen saviour. ✝️

He is risen and that makes the Lord’s Day worth celebrating.

Can anything take God’s place

Scripture

Can anything take God’s place?

Scripture’s answer is clear: no.

“I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other…” (Isa. 42:8)

Nothing created deserves the worship that belongs to God alone. Not images, possessions, success, people, or anything else we may be tempted to place above Him.

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

God alone deserves our worship, our praise, and first place in our hearts. ✝️

Does the Bible tell us to pray to saints

Scripture

Does the Bible tell us to pray to saints?

Scripture points us directly to God through Jesus Christ.

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” ( 1 Tim. 2:5)

Because of Christ, we are invited to come boldly before God ourselves:

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace…” (Heb. 4:16)

Our access to God is not through another human mediator — it is through Christ alone. ✝️
